LASERS IN DENTISTRY

What is laser dentistry?

laser in dentistry

If you’ve never heard of this innovative type of dental care, now is the time to learn. Laser dentistry is a minimally invasive option when you’re facing gum surgery, cavity treatment, or other oral issues.

Laser Overview

Dental lasers are a family of instruments. Some lasers are used for surgery, some to harden restorative materials and enhance tooth bleaching, and others to remove diseased (decayed) tooth structure prior to restoration – different lasers for different procedures.

Depending on your treatment needs, your dentist may use the laser for a longer period of time or possibly only for brief moments. However, even those procedures that require only a short period of laser usage benefit from the advantages of laser therapy. With laser surgery, there is a reduced need for local anesthesia, bleeding is minimized, postoperative swelling is reduced, and there is usually little, if any, discomfort afterward. Laser energy enhances the effect of tooth bleaching agents for a faster and more effective result

Compassionate and Comfortable Care with Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry allows us to provide exceptional oral healthcare because lasers are safe and effective, and do not require anesthetics. A number of laser dentistry procedures can be performed, including:

  • Laser periodontal surgery: no scalpels, sutures, or post operative pain
  • Smile improvements, i.e. gum sculpting that lengthens teeth due to oversized gingiva
  • Gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, crown lengthening, and other gum corrections
  • Root canals treatment. (for sterilization of canals)
  • Removal of oral lesions such as fibromas or pappilomas, usually with topical anesthesia only
  • Excisional and incisional biopsies
  • Frenectomy (“tongue-tie” release, orthodontic or periodontal indications) without anesthesia or sutures
  • Pediatric procedures because the lack of needles or drills is a huge plus for kids
  • Cold sore treatments
  • Apthous ulcer (“canker sore”) treatments
  • Treatment of minor mouth and gum irritations

Benefits of Laser Dentistry:

  • Comfort:
  • With laser treatment, there is reduced or no bleeding, minimized swelling, no charring, and no drill noise or vibration.
  • Reduced Risk of Infection:
  • The laser’s high-energy light beam acts as a sterilizer on the area it is working, thereby reducing the risk of bacterial infections and relapses.
  • Anesthesia Limited or Eliminated:
  • Because laser dentistry is virtually painless, no longer will you suffer with fear of injections and numbness.

Are dental lasers safe?

If the dental laser is used according to accepted practices by a trained practitioner, then it is at least as safe as other dental instruments. However, just as you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun, when your dentist performs a laser procedure, you will be asked to wear special eyeglasses to protect your eyes from the laser.

  • We are proud to offer this latest technology to our patients.
