Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly.
Crooked teeth are:
• Not pleasant to look,
• Are harder to keep clean, and
• Cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain.
Orthodontic treatment can start as early as 7-8 years depending on the severity of the abnormality.
Types of braces:
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and arch wires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile. These are the cheapest of all the types.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are tooth coloured and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth and are therefore “invisible” when you smile. Lingual braces are 100% customized to match the shape of your teeth and therefore the metal appliances are created uniquely for you.
Removable appliances are plastic plates that can be used to correct tooth position. They are not suitable for everyone and‚ in most cases are used for the correction of simple problems.
Braces for Adults
If the teeth and gums are healthy, age is not a factor. About 40% of orthodontic patients are adults.
